Zoom opens a data center in Singapore, the first in South East Asia.

Zoom has opened a new data center in Singapore, the first in South East Asia, said Tuesday.

The use of Zoom's video conferencing software has grown when a large amount of people around the world work from home because of coronavirus barriers, but the firm has also come under pressure on privacy and security issues.

The Singapore data center, from which users of the organization in South East Asia can connect, has a total of 18 locations worldwide.

The company also plans to add more Singapore personnel, including engineers and sales workers, said Abe Smith, Head of International Zoom.

Security researchers found this year that Zoom rerouted a lot of calls via its servers in China, even though those calls were made outside of China.

The business reported that this had taken place in "highly restricted circumstances" and had withdrawn its mainland China data centers from an approved list of back-ups for users outside of China.

Zoom's Smith said that since January, there has been a 65-fold rise in usage of its free services in Singapore, with three times the number of paid subscribers. Since March, the forum has been used by 400 schools in the city community.

Singapore temporarily suspended the use of Zoom by teachers in April after "extremely significant events" during the first week of coronavirus shutdown, including an incident involving lewd photographs appearing on screens during a geography class.
