Zoom, a video conferencing service that rose to the top during the coronavirus pandemic, plans to launch a new technology center in Bengaluru. Zoom said the new technology center would "supplement" the current R&D centers of the organization and reinforce the engineering leadership of Zoom.
We have a world-class team, but to keep up with the development and keep up with the needs of the markets we 're serving, we need to expand, said Velchamy Sankarlingam, President of Product and Technology for Zoom, on the sidelines of the announcement. "India has the best talents to tap into based on our experience."
Sankarlingam added that DevOps engineers, IT, Security, and Business Operations will be recruited by the company to head the field. The hiring will begin shortly, Sankarlingam said.
Zoom said it has big ambitions for India, where the company has seen tremendous growth over the last few months. Zoom saw a 6700% rise in free app registrations in India from January to April 2020.
The announcement of the launch of a new technology center in India comes at a time when Zoom is battling social media rumors that it is Chinese-owned. We are a U.S. corporation, we are listed on the NASDAQ, and we have our headquarters in San Jose , California, said Aparna Bawa, Chief Operating Officer of Zoom.
We at Zoom are based on having the most easy-to-use collaboration platform that is also very safe and stable.
Zoom was also under the jurisdiction of the Indian Government when the app was deemed a "non-safe site." The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs Cyber Coordination Center said in a 16-page advisory that government employees could not use the Zoom app for official work.
Following the rise in popularity due to the coronavirus pandemic, Zoom has faced a backlash of privacy and protection around the world. Eric S. Yuan, Chief Executive of Zoom, had to apologize for the security lapses and vowed to concentrate on user privacy and protection in the creation of new applications.
As part of a 90-day plan to enhance security and privacy on the platform, a new version of the Zoom 5.0 app was released that included encryption and improved privacy controls.
But lately, Zoom has faced tough competition in India , particularly from local rivals. The introduction of JioMeet is seen as a direct challenge to Zoom with identical features. The new video conferencing software, even if created by Jio, has a similar user interface and is totally free of charge. Zoom is up against Airtel BlueJeans as well.
The UI is one thing, Bawa said without calling JioMeet. What makes Zoom different is numerous, and it's not just the UI.
We have a tremendous back-end infrastructure that helps us to provide such high-quality video and audio across the globe.
The San Jose-based Zoom has an office in Mumbai, which is expected to increase in size, and two data centers in India, one in Mumbai and one in Hyderabad. In India, Zoom counts IIM, WNX, Tata Technologies, Crisil, ICRA and Religare as its customers. The company said the number of paying users has quadrupled across the world.
