YouTube's picture-in - picture website is functioning on iOS 14 again.
YouTube 's website now supports the iOS 14 image-in-picture mode again, after the feature mysteriously vanished last month. It can be allowed in both Safari and third-party browsers like Chrome or Firefox by extending the video to play full-screen, and then taping the tiny picture-in - picture icon at the top left of the interface. Then you're free to minimize your browser and use other apps while still watching a video. You can also push the PiP window to the side of the screen if you only want to hear music without the video obstructing the view.
OS-level picture-in - picture support was introduced as a new update to iOS 14, but soon afterwards it stopped working on the YouTube website for iPhone users. It continued to operate for users who subscribed to YouTube Premium, maybe unsurprisingly. It works with iPad users as well.
Although picture-in-picture is now working in browsers, it is not available in the YouTube app itself, where MacRumors states that the feature has never been enabled. You can play videos in the background via the YouTube app, but only if you have a YouTube Premium subscription. 9to5Mac notes that the service has recently tested a picture-in - picture mode in its iOS app, although no official announcements have been made.
