YouTube Testing a New Feature Allowing Users to Purchase Items Seen in Videos

YouTube is developing a new feature that encourages people to order items they see directly from the website in videos. Viewers will be able to explore and shop for items found in chosen YouTube episodes. The functionality is currently being reviewed on a video streaming site with a limited number of US users on Linux, iOS, and the Internet. Chosen creators who are part of this pilot may add some items to their videos that will be available for purchase with a shopping bag icon.

Microsoft-owned corporation posted info about the latest functionality being tested on the Google help website.

YouTube claims that the feature would help users to get the related details and shopping options for the items they see in the videos. The network claims it partners with chosen artists for this pilot.

Viewers will be able to see a list of the items featured by clicking on the shopping bag icon that will appear in the bottom left corner of a frame. From here, they can explore each product page, where they can find more detail, related videos, and options to buy the product.

YouTube started offering Google Shopping advertisements to customers six years ago, trying to be a digital storefront. The advertisements allowed users to shop directly through the images.

In October 2020, Bloomberg announced that YouTube had begun asking creators to use YouTube tools to tag and track video products. The data will be connected to the Google Shopping Tools and Analytics as per the report. The article claimed that a YouTube spokesman had indicated that the site was evaluating functionality for a small range of video platforms and that developers will have discretion over the items that are viewed.

The new test run on YouTube appears to be an evolution of the same theory. You will be able to expand out this feature to more users over time.
