"I'm like 'How many users are there? "Mr. Brewer, Columbus, Ohio's 28-year old maker of music, said. Instead he remembered that his family remained home, just watching videos and shows.

Since people spend more time at home with coronavirus restrictions, many of them are more than ever focused on video streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and HBO Now.

The problem is that their families and friends are likewise. Although the services allow accounts to be shared, they restrict the number of devices that stream at once, thus creating friction among their family members.

Mr Brewer said that in the late afternoon, his young son was watching a Netflix show and suggested other ways that the boy could spend his time, such as his mom's reading a book and colouring.

"Anything else he can't do? "Asked his son, Mr. Brewer remembered. "Has he no computer schoolwork to do? Mr. Brewer said he ended up watching videos on YouTube to spend his time when he can't access the family account.

His parents require him to use their own accounts, he said, he was not interested in joining his own Netflix account.

Fatima Akoob, a 27 year-old student in Durban, South Africa, told her Whatsap family members who are blocking Netflix messages. She said that her brother gave her "literally anyone" password, which was compounding the problem.

"I believe that my colleagues, my uncles, my aunts, have it," said Ms. Akoob, who is suspect that she, her family and friends, have passed the password on. "That is why right now it's gone a little wild."

She recently discovered that Netflix sent her brother an email to flag that anyone accessed Dubai 's family account.

When she questioned her uncle, he said that he had been acquainted on an international flight with the passenger sitting next to him and shared his password with her as a kind gesture.

"I've been like no, no, man, what you're going to do! "Ms. Hakob said.

Ms. Akoob's brother recently changed the password following intensive lobbying by others in the family to limit who could see it.
