Google has just issued an official update to Gmail, enabling it to be set as the default email program for iOS 14 users.
iOS 14—released last week by Apple — adds the option for users to set up third-party email applications as the default for iPhone and iPad devices running the latest version of Apple's operating system. But it's always up to the developers to actually add support for the functionality that Gmail's new update does.
After you've installed the latest update, simply go to the iOS Settings app, pick the "Gmail" menu, and find the newly added "Default Mail App" menu. Google also says that the Gmail app can prompt users with guidance once they've been upgraded.
It is important to note that iOS appears to have a bug that automatically switches third-party browsers and email applications back to Apple's default mail and Safari after restart; Apple has yet to comment on the problem or announce when (or if) it will be resolved.
Google has completely welcomed Apple's new default app options, with the company already adding Chrome support to set it as the default browser on iOS 14 ahead of the final release of Apple's apps.
