With updates to Chrome and WebView, Google addresses a problem that was causing Android apps to crash.

For Android users, some apps were crashing, but Google has since fixed the problem. The problem was caused by Android Device WebView, a system component that allows Android apps to display web content. Google has released a patch that allows users to upgrade their Android Device WebView to version 89.0.4389.105 as well as their Google Chrome to the most recent version. Both can be found on Google Play.

According to the Google Workspace dashboard for Gmail, the problems started on Monday afternoon and lasted about seven hours. Before the problems were resolved, the company advised using the desktop gui.

Some users claimed that uninstalling the new WebView update resolved the issue, and Samsung's official US support Twitter account confirmed this.

“We are aware of an issue with WebView causing some apps on Android to crash for some users,” Google said in a statement to The Verge. “We are currently working to fully validate the scope and a fix is in progress.”

All services appear to be operational at this time, according to the dashboard.
