Will we soon be able to buy a solar car at 30,000 €?

The Dutch start-up Lightyear has made a name for itself in recent years for its One model , a solar prototype that is shaking the sector with startling figures, such as its 800 kilometers of range and its drag coefficient of 0.20. Dream performances which, on the other hand, have a nightmarish price: 149,000 euros! But aware of the sum, and therefore of the inaccessibility of its product, the company plans to put on the market a new model within the reach of a greater number of exchanges.

Become the Tesla of solar . In an introductory speech (a keynote, if you prefer) the CEO of Lightyear gave some clues about the next model of the firm simply called Lightyear Two . And if the brand is rather stingy in detail, it still announced that the machine should enter production in 2024 or 2025, be launched in Europe and North America and above all, be sold around 30,000 euros. In summary, in the coming years, a long range solar vehicle will be put on the market at a particularly affordable price.

For the moment little talk about the capabilities of its model Two, the startup has nonetheless declared that it will rely on the technology developed for the Lightyear One (pictured in the article), but with a larger battery. small. Enough to allow more affordable prices and faster recharging times. On the other hand, with less autonomy.

As a reminder, Lightyear comes from the Solar Team Eindhoven , a group of engineering students from the Technical University of Eindhoven (Netherlands) who took part in the World Solar Challenge with their Stella, Stella Lux and Stella Vita, from positive energy solar cars - meaning they can produce more energy than they consume. Earlier this year , the same team also took their Stella Vita, a real solar house with a shower, on the roads of Europe to promote their concept. The Netherlands is not famous for good weather, but it is increasingly famous for solar.
