Warner Bros. fast tracking Wonder Woman 3 with Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot on board.

Just two days after Wonder Woman reached theaters in 1984 and HBO Max, Warner Bros. says he's placing the third installment in the series on the fast track. Gal Gadot will return to her role as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman and Patty Jenkins will write and direct again, Warner Bros. Chairman Toby Emmerich said in a Sunday tweet.

As fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince, driving the powerful opening weekend performance of Wonder Woman 1984, we're excited to be able to continue her story with our real life Wonder Women – Gal and Patty – who will come back to conclude the long-planned theater trilogy, Emmerich said.

According to Warner Bros., Wonder Woman's opening weekend in 1984 was better than anticipated, selling $16.7 million in tickets to 2,100 theaters in North America, despite the fact that the coronavirus pandemic is still in place in several cities. The film was released concurrently on HBO Max, where it will play for a month before it starts in theaters.

Wonder Woman 1984 broke records and exceeded our expectations for all of our key viewing and subscriber metrics in its first 24 hours of service, and the interest and momentum we're seeing indicates that this is likely to continue well beyond the weekend, said Andy Forssell of WarnerMedia's direct-to-consumer division.

The first Wonder Woman film—part of the DC Expanded Universe—was released in 2017 for universal critical acclaim, accounting for over $800 million in box office worldwide. The opening date for WW 1984 was delayed several times due to the coronavirus pandemic until Warner agreed to drop it on HBO Max and theaters at the same time.

So far, the ratings of the 1984 World War, starring Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Pine, have been somewhat negative.
