Amazon employees at six sites across Germany are preparing strike on Monday because hundreds of staff in their logistic centres, union officials told Reuters, are contaminated with the coronavirus. The syndicate says the company places profit above the safety of workers.
According to Reuters, the Labor Union Verdi says that 'minimum 30 to 40 colleagues have been infected.' The strike is 48 hours long and will be carried out under the slogan "good and healthy work."
In recent years, warehouse personnel from Amazon have hit worker salaries and conditions several times in Germany.
Amazon's warehouse workers in the US have demonstrated in recent months against what they say is uncertain working conditions, and have left work in a number of cities. While coworkers evaluated the coronavirus favorably, staff blamed the organization for not notifying employees.
An lawsuit was brought against the organization at the early stage of this month by a consortium of three Amazon warehouse employees in New York saying the firm and their families are at risk of contracting the virus.
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, at least 7 employees at Amazon's warehouse in the United States have died.
The Amazon-sites in Leipzig, Bad Hersfeld, Rheinberg, Werne and Coblenz are expected to strike on Monday, according to Reuters.
Germany is the second largest e-commerce giant after the United States.
