As part of a new approach to disinformation, Twitter Inc will be applying Label and warning messages to such tweets containing controversial or misleading information about COVID-19. New Twitter labels will provide links to more information in cases where the possibility of tweet harm is not serious enough to remove it, however persons may be misled or confused, Twitter said in a blog post.
The company notes that alerts can also be applied to indicate the tweet clashes with advice from public health experts before the consumer sees it depending on the potential to harm and the type of misleading details in the tweet.Twitter said that these Labels, which would look identical to those introduced for fake and manipulated media flags, will also be used for tweets that were forwarded prior to Twitter advertising and used regardless of who sent the message.
“We will continue to introduce new labels to provide context around different types of unverified claims and rumors as needed,” Twitter said. The Commission announced that it will use internal mechanisms to proactively track COVID-19-related tweets and use trusted partners such as NGOs and Think Tanks to recognize content susceptible to harm.
