Twitch is working to create an HBCU sports team.

Twitch is working with Cxmmunity, a non-profit group aiming at increasing minority youth engagement in athletics and gaming, to create a historic Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) sports league, the corporation reported Thursday. Students at HBCUs will earn scholarships and financial assistance through their Twitch Learning Plan, and Twitch will help schools broaden their sports programs.

Chris Peay, co-founder of Cxmmunity, claims he knows firsthand about the lack of visibility in the game community as an HBCU alum. As we grow up, you 're always encouraged to get good grades so that you can get into a good college, graduate from college, and get a good career, Peay said.We barely think about entrepreneurship, let alone entrepreneurship in the sports and video games business. It's generally frowned upon in every way.

Statistics from the International Game Developers Association reveal that 83 per cent of Black youth play computer games, but the vast majority of video game creators—68 per cent — are either Western or White. The goal of the new initiative is to get more people of color to work in the video game and sports industry by building a pool of Black talent, the businesses said.

There are more than 200 individual sports teams in the three national sports leagues — Tespa, StarLeague University, and the National Association of Collegiate Sports (NACE). Morehouse University is actually the only sports league HBCU, however Twitch records. The first games of the HBCU sports league will hit the Cxmmunity Twitch channel on August 2nd.
