TikTok 's interim CEO, Vanessa Pappas, is asking Facebook and Instagram to publicly join our challenge and endorse our lawsuit, as TikTok faces the Trump administration 's latest executive order that will block people from accessing the app from September 20.
The new order was issued by the Department of Commerce on Friday morning, and it effectively states that citizens are not permitted to download TikTok or WeChat starting on the 20th. TikTok will continue to operate in the United States for people who have already installed the software, but potential installations are forbidden.
Pappas' call for action came in the form of a response to a tweet from Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, who said that the US TikTok ban will be very bad for Instagram , Facebook, and the Internet more generally. Pappas added that it's time to "set aside our competitiveness and concentrate on core values such as freedom of speech and due process of law.
Trump's administration called for a ban on TikTok earlier this year due to data protection concerns. The administration requested that ByteDance sell its US operations to an American company by 15 September, or that TikTok be prohibited in its entirety. Currently, the administration and ByteDance are said to be negotiating with Oracle to secure a contract. TikTok also filed a complaint against President Trump in August, alleging that Trump's initial order does not provide proof that TikTok is still a national security threat to the United States, among other items.
TikTok released a statement following the order of the Department of Commerce, noting that the company has already committed to unparalleled standards of increased transparency and accountability well beyond what other apps are able to do. TikTok is already preparing to collaborate with the U.S. software provider, which will be responsible for managing and running the TikTok network in the U.S.
We will continue to fight the unfair executive order that has been enforced without due process and seeks to deprive the American people and small businesses around the US of a major forum for both speech and livelihoods.
