The new USI 2.0 standard for styluses fails expectations as it does not appear to be very universal after all.

A new report has found various compatibility issues with version 2.0 of the Universal Stylus Imitative (USI) standard that means older USI 1.0 styluses will not be able to work with some newer USI 2.0 devices. Chrome Unboxed found the problem while using Lenovo's new Chrome book Duet 3, when it felt that existing styluses were not working with the device.

It appears the problem with the Chrome book Duet 3is that its screen uses an in-cell design that mixes elements of the display with a digitizer that also handles stylus input. Chrome Unboxed also claimed in its report that this is a more compact and cost effective way to offer stylus input. But, it seems the support for the technology was only introduced with USI version 2.1 and now this is being seen as the reason why the Duet 3 does not work with Stylus made to work with USI 1.0 displays.
