The negative effects of Tik Tok

With new advancements in technology, the distinction between common person and celebrity seems to have been blurred. Every person who has access to high speed internet can have his or her voice heard through different social media platforms. Tik Tok has emerged as one of the most popular apps in recent times and its popularity seems to be increasing every day without showing any signs of stopping anytime soon. In a recent study, it was found that 62% of TikTok users are aged between 10 and 29.  The app is said to have an algorithm that keeps youngsters hooked to their mobile screens.

There are also certain negative attributes of this app that may cause serious harm to its users in the future. According to a report in2019, teenagers spend seven hours in average on their mobile phones. This statisTik alone is enough to raise red flags and is an indication that this generation spends too much time on the internet which could have damaging effects on their mental health. The average Tik Tok user spends around an hour on the app a day, but its highly addictive algorithm and hypnotizing visuals lead the user to spend majority of their time scrolling down videos. Tik Tok users' brains are fed new content every fifteen seconds which wire the brain to only pay attention to those fifteen seconds. These short videos can negatively affect a person's attention span. The long term effects of this app are yet to be studied but it wouldn't be an overstatement to say that Tik Tok has potential to cause harm to its users.
