The complicated history of graphic design nudes

There is nudity all over, but it's a bigger tabou in some locations than other. That's the concept behind "Head to Toe," the latest book that discusses nudity in graphic design.
"I noticed hundreds of books on art, photography, nudity — all but graphic design," he said in an interview with the phone. "We had nudity from the first Altamira cave paintings, but it is considered pornography beyond the fields of fine art."

The fact that nudity continues to be a near-universal tabu is reflected in the title of the book, which does not contain the word itself ('noise' is only contained in the subtitle): 'we have done that to prevent people from being repudiated and, in part, because book sales depend on libraries, especially in schools and schools, where we were at risk of not being accepted.

Culture Change
The nudity history of graphic design isn't linear, but rather a roller coaster of societies shifting, moral environments shifting and artistic positions developing-according to Ilic.

"Graphic design was the domain of straight white men in the 1960s and 1970s and before," he said. "Then money started to vanish and went to advertising which led graphic designers to do it there. This opened up the door to new groups, such as homosexuals, who started little by little impact on the industry.

"These men are moving into branding, now that there is even less money, and women start to come into graphic design. Each of these groups has brought to the table something, not just their esthetics, but also their desires.

Around 600 graphic design exampons, including newspapers, book cover, posters and ads, are used in the novel, which was cocreate with author Steven Heller. We discuss how architectural design has handled nudity differently from figure-drawing, sculpture, and mainly over the last two decades.

In art school, they put a nude lady in front of you the first year. But in design schools that never happen. It's like when you've chosen to paint, and never using a single color because it's not suitable, Ilić said. I wanted to show you what are wonderful things from so many different places using the nudity.
