The US makes it even more difficult to get Android updates for Huawei phones

The Trump administration tightens further restrictions on Chinese telephone manufacturer Huawei, making it harder for the company to get chips. And a temporary general license that has now expired and will not be extended to provide a remediation for Huawei customers , which makes it harder for older Huawei devices to update Google Android.

On Monday the US Department of Commerce said it allows for ongoing security research, which is critical for preservation of the integrity and reliability of existing and currently fully-functioning networks and equipment.

A temporary license covered a wide range of rural telephone companies that used Huawei 's devices in addition to allowing Huawei devices sold before 15 May 2019 to receive Android updates. According to a Reuters report, these companies must now apply for licenses for previously authorized transactions.

Huawei and its affiliates have been working through third parties to use American technology in ways which undermine US security and foreign policy interests, as we restricted its access to US technology, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross stated in a statement Monday.

In May 2019, Huawei and 114 of the Trump administration 's subsidiaries entered their company list, meaning US companies could not sell technology to the enterprise without explicit approval from the U.S. government. The President subsequently extended the ban until 2021 with reference to the International Emergency Economic Power Act. That order prevented US companies such as Google from doing business with Huawei, which prevented Huawei from obtaining an Android license and prevented Google apps from using Huawei devices.

In May, then in order to block shipments of semiconductors to Huawei, the Commerce Department issued an amended export regulation strategically targeting Huawoi 's acquisition of semiconstructors that are a direct result of software and technology in certain United States.

This rule prevented foreign semiconductor manufacturers using U.S. software and technology from shipping their products to Huawei unless they were first licensed from the USA.

Huawei said at the start of this month that processor chips are running out because of US sanctions and, due to continued economic pressure in September the company will no longer be able to make its own chipsets.

The government says it adds 38 Huawei affiliates to its blacklist in 21 countries, bringing the total of 152 affiliates.
