The 'Recently deleted' feature of Instagram lets you change your mind about deleting a post

Instagram is making it easier for deleted posts to be brought back. In the app, the company is rolling out a "recently deleted" function that will allow you to review and restore content that you have deleted, including photos, videos, reels, IGTV videos, and stories. This feature is positioned by Instagram as helpful against hacks, especially if hackers gain control of an account and begin deleting content. Starting today, in order to permanently delete or restore content, users will need to confirm they are the account owner through either text or email.

Deleted items will remain in the folder for 30 days, and they will be automatically deleted after that point if they are not touched.

Deleted stories are the exception, however: they will only stay in the recently deleted section for 24 hours before they’re permanently removed. To access the folder, navigate to Settings > Account > Recently Deleted.

Clearly, before permanently removing it, Instagram wants to give people opportunities to retain their content. The app already offers an archive or a way to keep posts without being publicly available, and it allows people to keep their posts as an option with this feature, even if they want to delete them initially. Instagram benefits from users having more content, and thus more information. The more people are able to encourage them to keep their posts, the better it is for the service.
