Alibaba says that its "unified domain name scheme" will make communication between blockchains easier and better.
In a United States patent Last Tuesday, the E-commerce Giant Patent Office (patent no. 10,666,445) said that its domain name system could allow interchained communication that would be simpler and seamless than existing interoperability solutions, naming the Cosmos interoperability blockchain project in particular.
Alibaba says it would enable greater identification and interaction with others within a broader network by assigning the generally recognizable domain names for blockchains or porciones of a blockchain, similar to the way that entities recognize each other and communicate using domain names such as ".com," or ".org."
The patent suggests that the problem with existing systems can become clunky and cumbersome. for example Cosmos requires that for every connection it has with a different blockchain each blockchain holds separate identifications. They are not reusable, which means there is only "local scope" in the identification system.
Alibaba says, however, that block chains need only one domain name in its simpler system – a unified blockchain domain name (UBCDN), which is recognizable and valid in all communication with other chains. It also means that you can communication with other systems without having to keep a book of specific identifications constantly expanding.
"The UBCDN is able to be used and recognized worldwide by all blockchain instants in the unified blockchain network, in spite of how many relay chains [network links] in the unified blockchain network are incorporated," reads the patent.
Alibaba has submitted a raft of patents related to blockchain in a wide range of applications. The Patent was obtained in December 2019 to allow the faster and safer use of consortium networks-private systems owned and managed by a few selected entities.
A patent does not automatically mean that a corporation can continue to operate. It is therefore not clear whether Alibaba has active plans at any time to launch its domain name system.
The blockchain platform for its subsidiary Ant Financial, which was unveiled in November, may be a potential real world home to Alibaba 's newly licensed domain name scheme.
The company states that the system has been designed with a consortium network in mind in the patent application. It includes a feature that allows reader-informed names to be more easily identified by entities, as suggested by the company.
CoinDesk contacted Alibaba for comment but received no reply from the press.
