The British Government is asking Japan to help develop its 5G cellular networks without Huawei, Nikkei reports.

The British Government asked Japan to help develop its 5 G cellular networks without Huawei Technologies, Nikkei said on Sunday, a further step in the global technology and security battle between the United States and China. The UK listed NEC Corp and Fujitsu Ltd as possible substitute suppliers to Huawei, the business daily reported, without naming sources.

British officials met with their colleagues in Tokyo on Thursday, two days after Britain requested Huawei 's hardware to be purged from its 5 G network by the end of 2027, Nikkei reported.

As Britain prepares to leave the European Union, concerns over Huawei 's protection forced Prime Minister Johnson to pick between the United States and China, balancing a crucial coalition against billions of investment.

Nikkei said the latest change reflects Britain's attempts to add new hardware manufacturers to market to help minimize the expense of the country's wireless carriers. The British Embassy in Tokyo to Fujitsu did not respond immediately to e-mail or text enquiries on Sunday. The Japan Cabinet Secretariat and the NEC did not respond to calls.

Huawei and China's foreign ministry had no immediate comments. British digital minister Oliver Dowden said last week that Britain was working with its allies to foster stronger rivals to Huawei, naming companies from Finland , Sweden, South Korea and Japan.
