Tesla asks employees to take June 10 without compensation

After some have already applied to holiday work in the United States that recognizes an end to slavery, Tesla told its employees it was allowed to take Juneteenth as "excused absence," according to internal emails first reported by BuzzFeed and CNBC. Also, the company told staff that they would not be paid unless they appeared.

Shortly after this news releases CEO Elon Musk tweeted that Juneteenth is now "considered to be a US vacation at Tesla & SpaceX." However, he did not immediately explain whether workers will receive pay on that day.

Other companies such as Spotify, Uber and Twitter from Silicon Valley had announced earlier that June 10 was a paid company vacation. Auto makers such as Ford and General Motors actually told their staff to observe a moment of silence.

Both emails came on Friday morning, after other shifts had begun from Tesla's North American HR staff, Valerie Workman. First she wrote that the company "fullly supports June 10 for all American employees who wish to take their day off in events relevant to you."

Soon afterwards, Workman sent another email (with the "JUNETEENTH!" subject line) saying staff should not be paid if they were not.

These emails came days after a small group of employees announced a Juneteenth rally to protest police brutality in Tesla's Fremont Factory and call for police defamation. The employees listed for holding the rally were one reason why they didn't think Workman and Tesla had done enough to respond to the recent countrywide and international demonstrations after George Floyd 's killing.

Workman previously emailed Tesla employees on 9 June announcing the "Listen to Understand" series which she said would enable us "to get together, listen to the stories of our colleagues, share learning resources, and help all of us understand new views."

Former employees who claimed to deal with Racism at the California and New York factories in Tesla's lawsuit were hit with more than one. The company did not answer an e-mail or the protest scheduled for Friday immediately.

In May, in violation of local home residence directives from the Alameda County government, Tesla reopened the Fremont plant. At that point , the company has sought to increase the production of the Y SUV model, which was delivered prior to shutdown. In an email to workers earlier this month, Musk told Tesla "really [makes] a difference by having more Model Ys right now."
