Tesla accounts now allow dual-factor authentication

Tesla accounts can now be secured with two-factor authentication (2FA), giving owners an extra layer of security around their car's connected services, Electrek says. A support page on Tesla 's website detailing how to set up a feature says that any third-party authenticator apps can be used to provide passcodes. There is no mention of support for 2FA codes over less stable SMS. Twitter users have verified that improved security works on both the Tesla app and the website.

Support for 2FA has been coming for a long time, with Tesla CEO Elon Musk acknowledging in August that the feature was too late. Ensuring that Tesla's user accounts are as safe as possible is crucial given the way Tesla's connected cars are. According to its Google Play page, the Tesla app can do anything from finding your vehicle, flashing its lights, and even unlocking it from afar — although you can set the car to require an additional PIN code before it starts.

Tesla's support page states that you can have up to two registered 2FA devices at a time, and that you can set up a backup passcode if you lose them. Otherwise, if your devices are missing, you'll have to contact Tesla.
