Spotify has today experienced a widespread failure to play songs. The problems started around 8AM ET, and a lot of Spotify users were prevented from playing songs correctly for over an hour. The songs were only played for a few seconds before their pauses, and the Spotify client had displayed an error that "can not play the current song."
Spotify has not explained the failure, but it seems to be connected with a business, which forgets to renew its TLS. A Cloudflare engineer noticed the expiry of an important Spotify certificate, and minutes after that certificate was renewed the service was returned.
Spotify suffered from failures is unusual. A broader Facebook iOS SDK issue in July caused the music streaming service to crash at the time of startup. We have reached Spotify to discuss today 's failure further and we will update you accordingly.
