With the PS5 launch approximately two weeks out, Sony has announced a redesign of its iOS and Android PlayStation App, and I'm very excited to check it out when the new console releases.
Early console users will have the option to remotely launch games, sign in to their PS5 directly from the app, and the app will also allow you to remotely access capacity on your console in case you decide to find room for a new game to load. Previously, the PlayStation App will help you import games to the PS4, but now the app lets me import and install games, plus access my PS5 storage.
Based on Sony's blog post, it seems like PS5 owners will have a lot of flexibility to control their consoles without dealing directly with them. It was such a hassle that I had to shuffle between several PlayStation applications and my PS4 just to take full advantage of all the features Sony offered.
Theoretically, the new PlayStation App will allow me to purchase a game (digitally), free some storage space, download it, install it, and review to make sure the program is up to date, all before I finally grab my DualSense controller and start playing. Best yet? The latest update helps me to send messages to friends, voice chat, and build party groups directly from the app. So if I was getting ready to play Call of Duty or Dead by Daylight with my buddies, I could set it up on my tablet.
The software also adds a new UI that totally overhauls the home screen, and now, as you can see from the pictures, it looks a lot better. I think the upgrade makes the software even more streamlined than it was before.
Since Sony incorporates its messaging framework, you no longer need a separate PS Messages program. In fact, PS Messages will no longer be usable, but any remaining messages and threads from the discontinued app will be migrated to the latest PS App upgrade.
