Social Media and its impact on Mental Health

Human beings are social creatures. We long for companionship and in order to fulfill this requirement many of us establish various relationships with people so that we can thrive and move forward in life.  There's no denying that being socially connected with friends, relatives and family members can boost up self confidence, raise self esteem, promote positive attitude toward life and even prevent loneliness. A person lacking social connections can face unwanted isolation, which could pose a serious risk to his or her emotional and mental well being.

In today's Information age, many of us rely on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat , Youtube and Instagram to find and connect with other people. We can never undermine the huge impact of social media and how this new medium has shaped the way people communicate with each other. We must also bear in mind that social media can never replace real life conversations. It has been found in studies that people who spend too much time participating in social media can suffer from adverse effects such as clinical depression and Loneliness.  Spending too much time on social media can also aggravate mental health problems such as anxiety and could also be cause of sleep problems such as Insomnia.
