Skype now has the fun of Microsoft Teams' Together Mode

Microsoft is introducing one of its best video call features to Skype this week. Together Mode, which uses AI to segment your face and shoulders and position you in a virtual space with other people, is now available in Skype. You'll need at least five people with webcams to make this feature work, and it'll put everyone in a simulated world as if they're sitting next to each other.

You don't even need the Skype app to take advantage of Together Mode, as it works through the Skype web version without the need for an account. Users of Skype can set up a Meet Now meeting and share a connection with everyone they want to join.

Microsoft first introduced Together Mode back in July for Pandemic-era gatherings, and the NBA started using the feature to carry basketball fans to court on a virtual live game experience. Even it's surprising to see a feature of Microsoft Teams making their way to Skype.

Millions of people flocked to Zoom earlier this year when the pandemic forced many to work from home and socialize with friends through video calls. Skype has largely skipped this major moment, as Microsoft has gradually turned its attention on video call and collaboration teams.

In addition to this new Together Mode feature, Microsoft is also introducing its Wide Grid Mode feature to Skype so that you can see all video streams at the same time. This new version of Skype, available on Windows, Mac, Linux, and the internet, also provides more context options and lets people add friends to their on-going calls using their phone number.
