Shanghai introduces a consortium for AI investments

(China Daily) On Friday, Shanghai unveiled an artificial intelligence investment consortium on the fringes of the 2020 World AI Conference.

Shanghai AI Reception Hall is a one-stop solution to enhanced Shanghai AI development, a complex comprising academics, investment, technology and industry actors.

The Shanghai AI Industrial Investment Fund is organizing an expert committee to provide insight, a CEOs and CEO technology bloc, a start-up training programme, and an investment club to connect fledged AI companies with their capital. The Shanghai AI Industrial Investment fund will organize the initiative.

The city has accumulated advantages in the technology, the industries, applications and the talented ecosystem, said Chen Mingbo, Deputy Secretary General to the Shanghai municipal government, in their effort to become an AI hub.

Shanghai 's strengths will continue to develop six major industrial clusters in the next phase, including independent drivers, robots and smart chips, optimize industrial spending throughout the city and encourage 20 major companies to help the city to join the world AI League by 2025, he said.

Xu Li, co-founder and CEO of SenseTime, AI company, stressed the need to address major problems with the advancement of AI, as well as a list of long-stack problems.

Therefore, an open algorithm system is essential.

During a Friday sub forum, Xu announced an upgrade to over 100 algorithmics and 600 pre-trained models to include the Indigenous OpenMMLab, an open source AI algorithm system, allowing more industries to jump on the AI bandwagon.

At the technology level, the ambition of Shanghai AI does not stop. The municipality also published Friday the Action Proposals for the collaborative implementation of the AI Governance Consensus Principles aimed at providing guidance in the responsible use of AI.

When AI technologies are used in every aspect of our lives, it is likely that we should also be aware that, in addition to their commercial value, they will have a social , legal and governance impact, said Yin Qi, Megvii co-founder and CEO.

To this end , the company set up an ethics committee to address issues of AI and focused on reliable technology based on application, as well as data safety and protection.

Only being responsible is sustainable for AI, he said.

Omar Sultan Al Olama, the United Arab Emirates Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, agreed. In a video talk given to the event, he said the responsible development and deployment of AI is the key to ensure the future is better than our current version.

I believe that these challenges will be overcome if we come together, work hand in hand and create an entirely improved future for everybody. "Can I get sufficient data, and unbiased data to deliver the service so as that the person receiving the service is not affected by these data?."
