Senior U.S. official accused China of supporting North Korea 's cyber robberies

On Thursday, a senior U.S. justice official accused China of helping North Korea launder money from major cyber robberies it has carried out to collect funds in the face of foreign sanctions. At a Washington think tank gathering, John Demers, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, also said that North Korea is likely to obtain assistance from China in the form of cyber skills and training.

The other stuff, uh ... It really pops out of our cases. Is China's role in helping North Koreans escape sanctions ... In helping them launder money that they have somehow gotten, or that they want to get into the regime, or that they have robbed, or that they want to help them transport goods, Demers said.

Support across Chinese cyber infrastructure is likely to be provided in terms of exchanging knowledge and training from the Chinese side, he added in the event organized by the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Demers said that those involved in the breach of Chinese-backed international sanctions imposed on North Korea for its nuclear and missile programs included unscrupulous private individuals and companies.

But the main problem is likely to be countries like China that ... Don't want to see North Korea fail, he said.

Demers continued that China was playing a balancing act because it was also not exactly enthusiastic about unnecessarily hostile North Korea-an simple nod to Beijing's proclaimed resistance to North Korea's nuclear weapons and missile programs.

The U.S. in March. The Ministry of Justice charged two Chinese citizens with laundering more than $100 million in bitcoin on behalf of North Korea and detailed use of hackers by Pyongyang to bypass sanctions.

Demers tended to go deeper in implying Chinese state interference, a charge that comes at a time when the Trump administration stepped up its attacks on China in the run-up to the US presidential election of Nov. 3.

Asked to comment, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington said that China had always introduced US resolutions on North Korea, adding, I am not aware of the situation you described.

The Chinese Government is a staunch supporter of cyber security and actively condemns and fighting all types of cyber attacks and crimes in line with the law.

U.N.A. Experts tracking sanctions enforcement said last year North Korea raised an estimated $ 2 billion for its arms programs using widespread and increasingly advanced cyber attacks to rob from banks and cryptocurrency exchanges.

Experts said that North Korea continued to carry out such attacks internationally this year, and they were researching how Pyongyang was laundered virtual money.
