Photoshop's sky substitution feature makes it easy to render a flawless sunset fake.

Adobe is planning to add an AI-powered sky replacement tool to Photoshop that makes it easier to swap the sky in any image with just a few clicks. The business previewed the YouTube tool in advance of its Adobe Max meeting, scheduled for October 20–22.

The tool uses machine learning to automatically recognize the foreground and background of the picture, saving people from making complicated masks to distinguish the two. You can load a variety of dramatic preset skies, and the algorithms automatically change the warmth and temperature of the foreground to match the new sky. If you add a wet, golden sunset, the rest of your picture will be updated to match it.

Adobe is not the first company to deliver this kind of tool. AI-powered photo editor Luminar has provided one-click sky replacement since last year, for example. But this is the latest example of Adobe improving its first image editor with the aid of machine learning.

The art crew of the Verge had mixed feelings about the tool. They thought the color matching was well done, but they were careful to test the functionality from a simple demo video. Like any company demoting a new product, Adobe is only going to choose the most flattering examples. They also found, however, that Adobe's automated cutting tools usually work pretty well and will certainly make this kind of editing a lot easier.

A sky replacement feature could be especially useful for Instagram influencers, always trying to build a perfect travel image. Last year, one influencer was blamed for seeing that she was using fake clouds in her pictures. Later, she said she'd always been transparent about editing her pictures, but maybe she needed more variety. Maybe I just need to change the sky I choose — but I kind of like the one I use! She has added. Photoshop may be helping.

Adobe didn't say when this new feature will be introduced to Photoshop, but you should expect to hear more information at the upcoming Max Conference.
