TikTok will soon make tailored advertising mandatory, which means that whether you want them or not, you'll start seeing ads in the app based on the type of content you interact with.
The app currently has a setting that lets users select whether or not they want to be served advertisements based on their app operation. Starting April 15, your settings will shift, and the advertisements you see will start to be focused on what you do on TikTok, reads a notice displayed when opening the app.
According to a TikTok spokesperson, the company is "committed" to protecting its users' privacy. On our Safety Center, we will continue to be open about our data privacy policies and assist users in understanding their privacy choices.
People will also be able to choose whether TikTok uses data from other apps and websites to personalize advertising. The update in TikTok's privacy settings mirrors how advertisements function on other social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Users may opt out of targeted ads based on monitoring through various sites, but not personalization based on activity on those sites.
The move is most likely linked to Apple's upcoming iOS 14 release, which will require developers to obtain permission from users to monitor their data across apps for targeted ads. Apps that do not ask for permission risk being suspended or deleted from the App Store. As more users opt out of cross-app monitoring, TikTok will target advertisements to a greater extent by making targeted ads mandatory.
