Pakistan is lifting the ban on TikTok after just 10 days

Pakistan lifted its ban on TikTok just 10 days after banning the app on the grounds that it hosted "immoral" and "indecent" footage. The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) now reports that TikTok has "assured" the Organization that videos will be moderated in compliance with Pakistan 's social norms and rules.

In the past, TikTok was not completely sensitive to Pakistan 's demands for restrictions on accounts and recordings. The company's new transparency report found that TikTok only worked on two of the 40 accounts from which Pakistan demanded material to be limited. The PTA's comment indicates that the TikTok moderation could be tougher in the future.

Pakistan is TikTok's 12th largest market for software downloads, with a record of 43 million installations, according to the analytics company Sensor Tower. Despite its 12th position in market share, Pakistan ranked third in terms of overall video removals for breaching TikTok's quality requirements in the first half of 2020, with more than 6.4 million videos registered. This videos have been deleted by TikTok, rather than at the behest of the government, while videos can be removed for violation of local laws.

We are pleased to see that the TikTok app has been restored in Pakistan and that we will continue to empower Pakistani voices and innovation in a safe climate, the TikTok spokesperson said in an email to The Verge.

TikTok remains illegal in India and is also under danger of being illegal in the United States. Restrictions could seriously impede TikTok 's development, but for the time being, the app is still a novelty.

Pakistan says that while TikTok is back in his country for now, it might still be blocked in the future if the organization does not deliver on its promises of moderation. The PTA would be constrained to indefinitely block the proposal in the event that the requirement is not met, the Department wrote.
