The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has provided training and technical assistance to the Sri Lankan Telecommunications Regulatory Commission in order for MNP to be implemented successfully in the region.
According to Dawn, the Sri Lankan regulator plans to implement MNP for cell phone users in the country and will follow the PTA's procedures.
In 2007, Pakistan became the first country in South Asia to provide this service to its cell phone users.
The MNP is a program that allows a cell phone user to switch networks without having to change their phone number.
The MNP has placed pressure on Pakistani mobile phone operators to boost their service and has urged them to do so.
At the same time, the MNP's main technological task is to ensure that transfer calls run smoothly.
Last month, the PTA launched the ‘Missing & Stolen Device System' (LDS), an advanced automated system that mainly blocks cell phones that have been lost, stolen, or snatched.
If a phone is lost or stolen, users can report it to the appropriate authorities using this new method, and the stolen phone will be blocked within 24 hours after the correct verification. The PTA's Device Identification, Registration, and Blocking Mechanism is combined with this system (DIRBS).
