Twitch's Watch Parties feature is being rolled out to all today, offering streamers and their friends around the world the opportunity to view Amazon's movie & TV show catalog together. It's not only for families; as long as everyone has an Amazon Prime account, a streamer will now host a "official" movie screening for all their followers.
Watching parties have usually begun over the past few months as people trapped at home find ways to make viewing TV shows and movies more enjoyable and engaging. Unlike applications like Scener that help users stream Netflix, Disney Plus, & HBO titles to friends in the United States, Twitch's Watch Parties are primarily tailored for Amazon Prime Content.
Oh, in the morning, the scent of corporate innovation. Watch Parties are not currently available on mobile devices, but Twitch is working on it and expects to roll out the feature in the coming months.
The move arrives in the wake of new claims that non-gaming material on Twitch outperforms game content. Twitch began to slowly carry out the Watch Parties to some streamers in October 2019. Amazon also launched a Watch Parties feature directly to Amazon Prime Video subscribers in June for people who wanted to have private watch parties with friends and family.
While the product will soon be available worldwide, the licensing issues created by geographical areas will impact what audiences see. For example, shows that Amazon Prime Video is approved in the United Kingdom (like Star Trek: Picard) are not available in the United States on Amazon Prime Video; Picard lives solely on CBS All Access here. If a UK streamer plays an episode, a spectator in the US won't be able to watch the episode even though they're using a Prime account.
It's not clear how many streamers and fans in the United States have used the feature since the beta was rolled out to Twitch Partners in April. Even, the Watch Parties are another way for Amazon to continue to market all its products — and to keep customers within its community.
