Musk claims Tesla's two-factor authentication 'embarrassingly late' but arriving early.

Tesla CEO Musk tweeted Friday that the two-factor authentication for his device is "unforgivingly late" but apparently is now on its way. He did not have a timeframe, but said the two-factor authentication that requires an extra step to validate the user's identity at sign-in is in "full validation."

Judging from his tweet, Tesla's 2FA will be available via SMS and authenticator apps that are generally considered to be more secure. He said last year that Tesla was working on "fundamental upgrades" to Tesla 's core operating system and would be introducing 2FA shortly thereafter. The Tesla software essentially acts as a key to the company's new models , allowing remote locking and unlocking, among other choices.

Tesla vehicles are usually known to be very theft-proof, since they also have GPS, which helps owners to track their cars. In 2018 , the company launched the PIN code entry for its vehicles. But adding 2FA, which involves entering a code created from a different computer (usually a smartphone), would provide another layer of protection for its keyless entry systems.

Musk did not state when Tesla's 2FA was going to be eligible.
