Microsoft contributes three years of Android patches on the Surface Duo.

Microsoft has been dedicated to providing Android 's flagship Surface Duo phone with updates for three years. Surface Duo will be supported by OS and software patches for 3 years, says Microsoft's spokesman in a statement to The Verge.

It means that if you purchase a $1,399 Android phone from Samsung, you 're sure to get the new Android updates for three years. Obviously, these will also include upgrades to Microsoft's modified Android app interface and all other product changes that are expected to be introduced in the coming months and years to come.

This suits Samsung's latest promise to offer coverage for three generations of Android upgrades for its Galaxy S10 and older smartphones (with the exception of the A-series). Google's own funding for the Pixel phones now equals three years. Google offers Android software updates for at least 3 years from when the app first was available on the Play Store.

It's promising to see Google, Microsoft, and Samsung all commit to a consistent cycle of Android upgrades, particularly as Android has experienced problems with bugs and security protection over the years. It's a steadily changing condition, and Android 10 had the highest acceptance rate of any version of Android earlier this year.

Android also lags behind Apple 's remarkable adoption pace for iOS versions, for obvious reasons. Provided if Microsoft, Google , Apple, and others adhere to their upgrade commitments, we may be about to see Android moving a lot closer to embracing iOS upgrades in the years ahead.
