Mercedes-Benz USA is recalling 1.29 million vehicles due to a failure in its eCall software that may not provide emergency responders with the correct location of a vehicle after a crash, Car and Driver reported.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall covers vehicles sold from model years 2016 to 2021, including CLA-Class, GLA-Class, GLE-Class, GLS-Class, SLC-Class, A-Class, GT-Class, C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, CLS-Class, SL-Class, B-Class, GLB-Class, GLC-Class, and G-Class vehicles.
The automaker stated that it was unaware of any instances of material damage or personal injury resulting from the problem and planned to install a free software update over the air or at dealerships. The recall will begin on the 6th of April.
Mercedes-Benz said that a temporary collapse of the power supply of the communication module caused by a crash could lead to the position of the vehicle being incorrect during a possible emergency call. However, the company added, other functions of the automatic and manual emergency call function remain fully operational.
Reuters reported that in 2019, an incident in Europe was investigated by Mercedes-Benz where the automatic eCall system provided its vehicle with an incorrect position. Other situations were found by the company where an incorrect vehicle position was relayed.
