With the worldwide semiconductor scarcity persisting, it is expected that laptops and personal computers would grow more costly in Pakistan. Under the supplemental finance bill 2021, the government would levy a 17 percent sales tax on all computers.
However, the sales tax is free on computer imports and local suppliers, while laptops and desktop computers would be subject to a 17 percent sales tax.
Furthermore, the relevant organizations in the Exemption Schedule of the Sales Tax Act of 1990 will be eliminated shortly through the 2021 supplementary finance bill. However, the tax may be decreased after the shortage of semiconductors is overcome.
