Microsoft's Microsoft 365 apps and services will close support for Internet Explorer 11 next year. In the same year, August 17, 2021, the Microsoft Online Services such as Office 365, one-drive, Outlook and more will be discontinued from Internet Explorer 11. Microsoft is also ending Internet Explorer 11 support later this year, ending on November 30th with the Microsoft Teams web app.
While it will still take some time to take the Internet Explorer 11 users away, Microsoft hopes that the new Microsoft Edge Chromium-based Internet Explorer legacy mode will help.
It will continue to allow businesses to access old Internet Explorer websites, until Microsoft completely drops Internet Explorer 11 support in Windows 10. But it's a good first step if Microsoft stops supporting Internet Explorer 11 with its principal web properties.
In addition to support amendments, Microsoft intends to withdraw support for its previous Microsoft Edge version on 9 March 2021. The legacy Edge version won't get any security updates after the support date ends.
It says it will include new devices and future Windows Feature Updates all with the new Browser Edge, and Microsoft moved its existing Windows 10 users to its new Edge Chromium-based browser.
For years now, Microsoft has been working on killing the use and support of Internet Explorer. The new Edge browser was first presented by the company in 2015, when Project Spartan was codenamed. This was the start of the end for the brand Internet Explorer. Since that time Microsoft has labeled Internet Explorer as a "compatibility solution" instead of a browser, encouraging companies to stop using the older browser.
