Instagram's Reels feature would be extended to India after the prohibition of TikTok

In India, Business Insider reports, Facebook is testing Instagram Reels. Reels is a video editor designed to allow people to create 15-second TikTok-style videos, which can be shared, sent via DM, or posted to a Top-Hobby section of the explore tab.

The news came just days after TikTok was prohibited by the Indian government with 58 other applications in China. Business Insider reports that some Instagram users in India have already begun to receive the new feature in an update, and a Facebook spokesman has confirmed that the firm plans to publish the feature more extensively.

A Facebook spokesman told Business Insider, We plan to start testing an updated version of Reels in other nations, and Reels is a fun, imaginative way to get people expressing and entertaining. We are excited to bring more of our global community with this new version. No plans to share any more on the start date or in countries at this time.

After the first test in Brazil last year, Reels had a relatively slow rollout worldwide for iOS and Android. TechCrunch reported last month to France and Germany that the feature expanded.

Recently Facebook also announced that the Lasso video app in TikTok style, which is standalone, will be shut down with some speculation that it was the result of Reels' launch.

In order to compete better against Facebook, similar features in competition apps have been integrated into its own services. In 2016, we reported the "near-perfect copy" feature of Instagram's Stories, such as Snapchat's. Audio leaks from last year showed TikTok 's similarity to the Instagram's exploration tab by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, indicating he can be a host for some of the company's tries to rival his Chinese rival.
