With the launch of "suggested posts," Instagram is expanding its feed today. These posts, from accounts that you are not following, will appear after you have finished feed and give you the option to scroll through with the proposals from Instagram. The feed has so far been completely determined by the preferences of the users and the followers.
Instagram has been showing users a message for the last few years when their feeds are over, meaning that each post has been seen from the people they follow for the last two days. They can scroll past the marker for more content with suggested posts. The posts suggested will not be the same as the Explore posts. The content that people follow already will be linked to, while the Explore will focus people on adjacent content, says Julian Gutman, Instagram Home 's head of product. As an example, he used space content, which he regularly monitors and discusses with his feed. A proposed post could be a new photograph of a person that he does not follow, while his Explore page could contain posts related more largely to physics.
Gutman refused to comment on how often people get to the end of their food every day.
Ads are being shown in suggested posts, and for now only photos and videos are being posted, so you won't see any teased IGTV or Roll content.
Two years ago, Instagram's position on the screen felt like a significant reversal. Kevin Systrom, former CEO and co-founder of the company, took a decision with the mental health of users when they launched feed notification. At the time, he said that the company was working on 'tools that will help the Instagram community to learn more about the time they spent on Instagram,' he added that 'every time should be positive and deliberate.'
It wasn't designed to hold people in their hands that Gutman said.
With the improvement in machine learning and our ability to make it easier to see more of those posts that are on Instagram every day, I think this really comes from a vision for us a couple years earlier and bring that personalized relevance to you, he says. We want therefore to make it very easy when people finish their feed, to see that [relevant content]. Hence the motivation to deepen your interest. This truly is the motivation here.
The posts suggested also feel like Instagram takes TikTok 's insight, which throws users into a constant content feed, which never ends. This is part of the app 's success. Naturally, lengthening the feed also gives Instagram more advertising space to monetise it further. This is a win-win for Instagram although it means that users might spend more time in the app than ever before.
