The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro are the first two phones in OnePlus' new OnePlus 9 sequence. The OnePlus 9 Pro is the flagship, intended to compete with Samsung's Galaxy S21 Ultra and Apple's iPhone 12 Pro Max, while the OnePlus 9 is the lower-specced and slightly less expensive sibling. The OnePlus 9 starts at $729 for 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and goes up to $829 for 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Meanwhile, in the United States, the 9 Pro costs $969 for 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage and $1,069 for 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Both phones will be available for purchase on April 2nd, with preorders beginning on March 26th.
OnePlus based much of its announcement on the new phones' cameras, which were produced in collaboration with Hasselblad. The colors have been tweaked to appear more natural, and the ultrawide sensor on the 9 Pro and 9 is one of the largest to ever ship on a smartphone, according to OnePlus. The ultrawide uses a Sony IMX766 sensor with a 50-megapixel resolution and an aperture of f/2.2. The main Sony IMX789 sensor on the 9 Pro, meanwhile, has a resolution of 48 megapixels and is 1/1.43” in scale. Both have a 2-megapixel monochrome sensor and a 16-megapixel selfie camera, but the 9 Pro is the only one with an 8-megapixel telephoto lens.
On the software front, OnePlus has included a Hasselblad Pro Mode, which gives you more control over your photography settings and includes a focus peaking feature. Both can shoot video at up to 8K at 30fps, with the 9 Pro being capable of 4K at 120fps.
The 9 Pro has a 1440p 120Hz curved display with LPTO technology that adjusts the refresh rate between 1 and 120Hz depending on the content being displayed on-screen, reducing power consumption by “up to 50 percent,” as previously announced. It should also feel more sensitive in games that support OnePlus' Hyper Touch technology, according to the company.
The panel supports HDR10+ and has a maximum brightness of 1300 nits. The OnePlus 9, on the other hand, has a flat monitor rather than a curved one. It's not LTPO, has a lower resolution of 1080p, and is slightly less bright at 1,100 nits. However, the refresh rate remains at 120Hz.
The Snapdragon 888 processor powers the 9 Pro and 9 on the inside, with larger vapor chambers to keep them running cooler for longer. They come with 8 or 12 gigabytes of RAM and 128 or 256 gigabytes of storage. They help Warp Charge 65T, which according to OnePlus should be able to completely charge the phones' 4,500mAh batteries in under half an hour.
The 9 Pro can also charge wirelessly at up to 50W and is built to charge wirelessly whether it's in portrait or landscape orientation. Meanwhile, the 9 will charge up to 15W wirelessly.
The OnePlus 9 Pro will come in black, silver, and green color options, while the OnePlus 9 will come in black, light purple, and blue.
