The REvil ransomware party that last week's targeted A-grade celebrations is now alleging President Donald Trump's $42 million ransom, or he's going to show his "dirty laundry." Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks was a database managing some of the largest Hollywood stars including Madonna, Elton John, and Robert DeNiro. They were the first to use the database.
A large amount of estimated information containing confidential agreements, email addresses, non-release contracts and correspondences is being obtained from the ransomware community.
Hackers reported 21 million dollars up to May 14, but the New York law firm refused to pay and increased the ransom amount to 42 million dollars, threatening to reveal President Donald Trump's private details.
“The ransom is now $42,000,000 … The next person we’ll be publishing is Donald Trump. There’s an election going on, and we found a ton of dirty laundry on time.”
Threatent note mentioned “Mr. Trump, if you want to stay president, poke a sharp stick at the guys, otherwise you may forget this ambition forever. And to you voters, we can let you know that after such a publication, you certainly don’t want to see him as president … The deadline is one week.”
They asked for a rescue in Monero but said that Bitcoin would also operate if a higher sum is paid. It remains unclear how ransomware operators managed to obtain sensitive data from Trump as he was never a client of the law firm.
The concerned company says that hackers are likely to release the data even if they pay for the money. Hacking is considered an act of terrorism by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In fact it constitutes an violation of federal criminal codes to demand or pay a ransom.
In this situation, we'll have to wait to see how the events evolve.
