Google makes the saved positions tab in the maps more convenient

Google is carrying out some minor but important changes to Google Maps that concentrate on the Saved user page. If you haven't used it before, it lets you bookmark favorite spots, be they parks or bars, and group them by "favorites," "want to go," "starred places," or personalized lists.

The upgrade makes it easy to find locations because you have saved a number of them. You can now order locations from how recently you saved them and how nearby you are (if Google Maps has access to your area, that's what it actually does).

If you've switched your Position History on Google Maps, the app will also make it easy to add locations to the Saved tab by recommending locations depending on where you've been. The places you visited can now be added to the Timeline tab of the app.

As Google put it, You can also quickly locate that awesome hole in the wall restaurant that you enjoyed on one of your past holidays, or that trendy boutique that you entered a few weeks ago. All these observations are now grouped by time , place, area or nation.

Such updates (which are going out now, Google says) are definitely welcome. The Saved tab has always seemed to me to be a feature of much more promise than the real functionality, so it's nice to see it get a little more coverage. The thought of providing a device that serves both as a travel diary and a list of places to visit in your hometown is very tempting. But the real experience of using the Saved tab is a little disappointing.

The greatest problem is that if you've saved a lot of locations, it automatically covers up your map view, with no easy way to turn labels on and off (you can only cover individual lists). This effectively discourages you from actively saving spaces, and from using the apps as intended. These improvements are a start, but Google should do more than that.
