A YouTube warning disrupted Jack Erricker's schoolwork on Friday morning as he and kids around the world woke up to the news that their favorite game, Fortnite, had been taken down from the Apple Store and the Google Play store.
It's practically the only game I'm playing, said Erricker, an 11-year-old from Bengaluru , India, an ardent Fortnite player on his Apple iPad. I'm not pleased about it, I don't think it's a positive move.
Fortnite, which has attracted more than 350 million players worldwide, is especially common among younger players and has become one of the few lifelines in the outside world for children stuck at home during the coronavirus pandemic.
Unable to play outdoors, kids spend hours playing and battling with friends on Fortnite, which is free to play and available on almost all devices.
Google's Apple and Alphabet Inc. on Thursday pulled Fornite from their app stores for breaching the in-app payment guidelines, and news circulated quickly among children who are otherwise too young to get the headlines from CNN, the BBC, or the New York Times.
Removal ensures that no new players will access the game and the app does not receive updates from the store. But for now, the game will continue to work for those who already have it.
Calum Jack, an eight-year-old from London, had heard Fortnite news from friends in Asia as soon as he woke up at 6 a.m. It was "all over YouTube," he said.
He's online for up to 10 hours a day, playing, creating or just talking with up to 20 friends as far apart as Canada and India. Fortnite and other video games have been Jack 's primary media channel since the coronavirus shutdown suspended schools around the world in March.
"It's been really necessary since we were on vacation. We've been playing all the time, "he said.
Fortnite-owner Epic Games opposed Apple 's strategy of reducing transactions made within the app by encouraging consumers to pay Epic directly at a cheaper price.
The financial ramifications of the move were clear even to the young players.
Epic has been eating into Apple's profit margins, said Zoraan Kunnel, 13, from Bengaluru , India.
Epic posted a video on Fortnite, YouTube and other social media outlets that ridiculed Apple's famous '1984' commercial with the campaign 'FreeFortnite.' The campaign has been on social platforms and has tallied up almost 26 million views with the short-form TikTok video feature.
My buddies think Fortnite is going to take the case, Erricker said. There are a lot of people playing Fortnite, so they're going to be against Apple.
As about what Jack 's going to do if the game starts running on his iphone, he said, I 'd only play on the [Sony] PS4.
