Food delivery by drones is expected to begin in Islamabad soon.

Drones carrying meals from one community to the next? Take it with a grain of salt, but DC Islamabad Hamza Shafqat is determined to implement this same concept in the capital city!

As far-fetched as it may sound, big companies like Alphabet, Amazon, and Uber have been working on food delivery drones for quite some time, and with the global food delivery market valued at $127 billion this year, it only makes sense for more players to enter the space and capitalize on it through automation.

So, will we see drones flying about delivering meals to customers? If Shafqat is to be believed, residents of Islamabad may expect to see such a scene sooner than they might imagine.

“Using drones to deliver food in Islamabad.  Coming soon…,” the District Commissioner tweeted

The absence of specifics is definitely irritating, but the truth remains that it is a tempting prospect that will pique people's interest and get them thinking about how it may be realized.

Naturally, there are several concerns about the viability of adopting a drone-delivery system. Are they going to completely replace food delivery drivers, or are we looking at a hybrid concept? Can they withstand a wide range of weather and geographical conditions? Is it needed to have a line of sight in order to operate, because in that case, continual monitoring will be required, and it may be easier to hire a person to deliver your pizza to you?

These and other concerns will dominate the drone-powered food delivery conversations that will erupt in the coming days. In the meanwhile, you'll have to make do with human hands delivering your meal to you.
