Facebook starts marking pages of 'state-controlled media'

Following an announcement from the policy in 2019, Facebook began labeling media outlets "wholly or partially under its government's editorial control." Later in this year, it will label ads from these outlets and ban publicly controlled media in the United States.

The company labs these pages because, "they combine a media organization 's influence with the strategic support of the state, and we believe that people should know whether the news that they read comes from a government-influenced publication."

Facebook labels the "public media" outlets on the basis of a variety of factors, including ownership and funding information, the level of transparency in their sources and the existence of accountability systems such as correction policy. Outlets can appeal for their independent operation, including laws protecting editorial freedom and a credible external assessment. If not, the Facebook warning will be added to the pages around the world, and news feed updates in the US will require marking.

On pages and mails of other media, which were blamed for propaganda in the US, like Sputnik and RT, you can already see names.

They are now, along with other outlets like China Daily, defined as state-controlled media. YouTuba experimented in labeling state-sponsored news channels for 2018 but implementation was inconsistent. Facebook was not the first person to make such a decision.

Facebook says that "rarely" advertising in US government-controlled outlets. It is, however, blocking these advertisements from 'providing caveat against different forms of external influence in public debate before the US election of November 2020' which supplements the existing removal from Facebook of 'inauthentic' pages that propagate or disinformation. It is also a precautionary measure.

This protocol is part of a big initiative to safeguard the legitimacy of the 2020 election. Facebook has, however, been criticized for not testing politicians on its website, including President Donald Trump.
