Facebook tends to turn the light on the convergence between Instagram and Messenger chat services. On Friday night, several editors at The Verge across the country—both iOS and Android—recognized the update screen on Instagram's mobile app with the message "There's a New Way to Message on Instagram" featuring a list of features including a "new colorful look for your chats," more emoji reactions, swipe-to-reply, and the big one: "chat with friends who use Facebook."
When you press the update, the default DM icon in the top right corner of Instagram will be replaced by the Facebook Messenger logo.
Instagram chats are even more vibrant than ever, with the sender's messages changing between blue and purple as you swipe. However, at least for now, it's still not possible to send an Instagram message to Facebook users.
But Facebook has made clear its intentions to unify the messaging systems of its hugely successful apps to allow cross-messaging between Messenger, Instagram , and WhatsApp. Facebook was said to be restoring the existing network so that people who were on one of its applications could connect to others through various Facebook devices. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said he needs an end-to - end encryption network.
By combining the most successful features, Facebook will interact more specifically with Apple's iMessage.
Facebook acquired Instagram for $1 billion in 2012, and bought WhatsApp for $19 billion in 2014. The firm did not respond immediately to a request for comments on Friday evening.
