Facebook brings official music videos to its U.S. site after working with major music labels, including Sony Music, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group, revealed today. Videos can be viewed on Facebook Watch and on individual artists' pages. We can be shared, responded to, or commented on as every other Facebook video.
It's a huge move for Facebook, which in the past has only been able to post brief previews of artists' music videos on major US labels, TechCrunch previously noted, or only recordings in certain situations, according to Bloomberg. Through this move, Facebook is approaching an environment where YouTube is dominant.
Music videos are one of the most common genres on the Google web platform.
Bloomberg reports that Facebook's curiosity in music videos is likely to stem from the increasingly competitive advertisement prices associated with content.
As part of its announcement, Facebook notes that its website will feature exclusive music video content from a range of artists including J Balvin, Karol G, Sebastián Yatra, Alejandro Fernández and Calibre 50. A new official music video from Lele Pons will be seen exclusively on Facebook and will also feature an exclusive video from Panamanian R&B singer Sech.
Bloomberg recently claimed that Facebook had agreed to finance the production of some music videos in return for exclusivity.
Facebook has also produced music videos in Thailand and India.
The arrival of music videos on Facebook comes just months after the Facebook Gaming division has acquired Mixer 's streaming partners as Microsoft shuts down the site. All Mixer pages and applications immediately migrated to Facebook Gaming on July 22nd.
Facebook says that its latest music videos feature will be available on iOS, Android, and desktops beginning today.
