Facebook code change caused the shutdown of Spotify, Pinterest and Waze apps

If you're an iPhone user, the odds are pretty good that you spent a frustrating part of the morning trying to re-open apps. I know that my morning walk was dampened by the inability to fire Spotify. A number of other users have reported similar issues with a number of apps, including Pinterest and Waze.

The issue has since been resolved, with Facebook pointing out that the problem rests firmly on its shoulders. A log page notes a sudden spike in bugs from Facebook's iOS SDK, dating back a few hours. Facebook says it's the fault of a code change.

"Today, a code change triggered a crash for some iOS apps using the Facebook SDK," writes the developer team. "We identified and resolved the issue quickly. We 're sorry for any inconvenience.

While the issue has been addressed relatively quickly (though a few hours may feel like a lifetime depending on how dependent you are on the app), annoying parties will no doubt remember back in May when an update to the SDK created a similar wave of issues. There was no doubt that the issue was even more distressing for developers whose apps use the SDK.

After the second big problem in recent memory, it's easy to believe that others are reconsidering their relationship with the social network — after all, bad experience can put people off the platform completely, as social media discussions about Apple Music vs Spotify seemed to point to this morning. In the end, many users will blame the app, rather than the third-party SDK that caused the crash.

When it comes to updating the SDK, Facebook seems to be moving too quickly and breaking up too many things. We've reached out to the company to see how it plans to address the issue in the future.
