Facebook will add messages to its News Feed and Instagram feed to encourage people to wear face masks, the company said on Thursday. An alert will appear at the top of the Facebook News Feeds that directs users to the COVID-19 Information Center and will have links to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information. Instagram will include a similar CDC link prompt.
The company says that the move is in response to the increase in COVID-19 cases in the US. On Wednesday, the US set a one-day record, adding 50,000 new cases, as many states began reconsidering their June re-opening plans.
The USA had over 2,7 million COVID-19 cases as of Thursday, with over 128 000 deaths.
The current CDC recommendation aims to protect people from possible infection through the use of masks in public areas. Masks reduce respiratory gout transmission that can propagate the virus.
During the pandemia, Facebook fought to contain misinformation about the coronavirus on its platforms. It has added new functionalities, including an alert to inform people who have engaged in a post with false information to stop the flood of wrong information.
Later today , the company said, the prompts for the mask will appear in Instagram and Facebook.
